Even clowns go to funerals

Parmi divers exercices de dessin en perspective, ce clown est apparu tout naturellement sous mon crayon avec un pot de fleur dans les mains, accompagné de la pensée incongrue que "Les clowns aussi vont aux enterrements". Je n'ai pas connaissance d'un décès proche qui aurait put m'inspirer l'idée, c'était juste une pensée aléatoire (un peu morbide) qui m'a fait garder le dessin même si je n'en suis pas si content que ça. Alberto et Ivan Navarette, de la "Place des Armes" de Santiago du Chili, ont choisi ce dessin parmi d'autres pour l'adapter en cuivre. J'aime bien le résultat, peut-être qu'on devrait le montrer a mes funérailles pour rappeler à ceux venu me donner "un dernier hommage" que "la vie est une blague: il faut la prendre avec humour!". :)

Doing some drawing exercises in perspectives, the clown with flowers appeared under my pencil, as by magic, with the thought that "even clowns go to funerals". Nobody close to me had died recently (nor did anybody close to me died soon after that!), it was just a random thought which made me keep the drawing even though I am not so proud of it. Alberto and Ivan Navarette, from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago of Chile, chose this drawing among several others, to adapt it in copper. I like the result, I think it would be nice to show such a frame at my funerals, to remind people that "Life is a Joke: take it with a laugh!". :)

Carricature of JyBy on Unicycle (in copper)

In 2008, I had some caricature of myself drawn by Claudio, an artist from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago of Chile. 4 years later, Claudio's neighbours, Alberto and Ivan Navarette, adapted his caricature in copper! The caricature feature several traits that I was showing at the time at the Plaza (I came several time unicycling or with some juggling stuff, dressed in rainbow colours and Claudio knows that I like dragons) and of Santiago, with the Andes in the background, and the high towers of Santiago. I love the caricature and its copper adaptation!

Prisoner in the Eye, in a Bottle, in a Copper Frame

J'ai dessiné il y a longtemps le visage d'un clown, dans l'œil duquel apparait un prisonnier. Le dessin m'en a inspiré un autre plus tard, celui d'une bouteille jetée à la mer, contenant ce dessin. Maintenant, Alberto et Ivan Navarette, les artistes du cuivre de la place des armes de Santiago du Chili, ont été une étape plus loin dans la récursion, et ont adapté ce dernier dessin maritime en le fixant dans un cadre en cuivre. Je l'aime beaucoup!

I drew a long time ago the face of a clown, with a prisoner hidden in the eye. This inspired later a drawing of a bottle lost at sea, with this drawing inside of it. Now, Alberto and Ivan Navarette, the copper artists from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago of Chile, went one step further in the recursion, fixing the representation of the bottle in a copper frame. I love it!

Dragon and Dancer in Copper

J'ai fait faire ce cadre en cuivre par Alberto et Ivan Navarette, de la place des armes à Santiago du Chili, pour mes chers amis Mirabelle, Michelle et Julien Sebot. Le dessin est inspire d'une photo que Julien a pris de Michelle, dansant devant des fontaines. Le dragon à gauche est en forme de J, l'initiale de Julien, quand les oiseaux sur la droite sont en forme de M, l'initialle de Michelle (et Mirabelle, mais elle n'était pas encore née quand j'ai conçu le dessin!), et divers autres details du dessin font référence aux occupations de chacun, tel qu'un gnome parachutiste (jeux de rôles et parachutisme de Julien) et les livres (Michelle lit beaucoup!). Pour leur mariage ils avaient reçu le dessin sur verre, bois et sur une tasse en metal, maintenant ils auront le cadre en cuivre :)

I had done this copper by Alberto and Ivan Navarette, from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago, Chile, for my dear friends Mirabelle, Michelle and Julien Sebot. The drawing is inspired from a picture that Julien took of Michelle, dancing in front of some waterworks. The dragon on the left is in shape of a J, the initial of Julien, while the birds on the right are forming the shape of an M, the initial of Michelle (and Mirabelle, but she was not born at the time), and various other details of the drawing refer to corresponding parts of their life, such as a gnome jumping from a plane (some roleplaying and sky diving from Julien) and the books (Michelle is an avid reader!). For their wedding they got the drawing on glass, wood and metal mug, now they will have it framed in copper :)

Three Penguins in Copper

J'ai offert ces trois pengouins en cuivre à mes trois frères: Je les ai dessiné au Chili, et Alberto et Ivan Navarette, les artistes du cuivre de la "Place des Armes" à Santiago, les ont adapté en cuivre. Alberto dit que ceux sont ses préférés parmi mes dessins, et qu'il compte en faire d'autres copies pour voir si les touristes vont les acheter. Je suis très fier!!!

I offered those penguins in Copper to my three brothers: I drew them while I was in Chile, and Alberto and Ivan Navarette from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago adapted them in Copper. Alberto said that those were his favorites of my drawings, and that he would do more copies of them to see if the tourists buy them. I am proud!!!

Monsters: Worst Case vs Adaptive Analysis

J'ai réalisé ce dessin pour la couverture de la thèse (d'habilitation à diriger les recherches) que je veut écrire, sur l'"analyse adaptive d'algorithmes et de structures de données". Alberto et Ivan Navarette, les aristes du cuivre de la place des armes à Santiago du Chili, l'ont adapté en cuivre: Je pense que la photo rendra très bien sur la couverture de la thèse! Le monstre de gauche, avec un oeuil et deux jambes, est supposé représenter la manière traditionelle d'analyser l'efficacité des algorithmes, basée sur une seule instance, la pire possible. Le monstre de droite, avec une multitude de jambes et de globes oculaires, est supposé représenter la manière d'analyser les algorithmes et structures de données que je présente et défend, une "analyse adaptative" où l'on considère familles d'instances pour rafiner l'analyse traditionelle dans le pire des cas. Alberto et Ivan ont fait un travail sensationel!

I made this drawing for the cover of the thesis that I want to write, about the "Adaptive Analysis of Algorithms and Data Structures". Alberto and Ivan Navarette, the copper artists from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago de Chile, adapted it in copper: I think it will look even nicer on the cover of the thesis! The monster on the left, with one eye and two legs, is supposed to represent the traditional way to analyze algorithms, based on a single, worst possible, instance. The monster on the right, with many eyes and many legs, is supposed to represent the way to analyze algorithms and data-structures that I present and defend, an "adaptive analysis" where one consider families of typical cases to refine the traditional worst case analysis. Alberto and Ivan made a fabulous work!!!!

Yann Tiersen en Cuivre!

Certains de mes dessins ont été adaptés en cuivre para Alberto et Ivan Navarette, deux artistes Chiliens (père et fils) de la Place des Armes à Santiago. Ils disent qu'ils vont en faire d'autre copies et essayer de les vendre!!!

Some of my drawings were adapted in copper by Alberto and Ivan Navarette, two Chilean artists (father and son) from the "Plaza de Armas" in Santiago. They say that they will make some other copies and try to sell them!!!

J'ai dessiné la pièce ci-dessus le jour du concert de Yann Tiersen à Santiago: la tête est supposé être la mienne, et la scène avec le piano représente mon anticipation du concert. Je pensais demander à Yann Tiersen de signer un autographe sur le dessin, ou lui donner le dessin, mais il y avait bien trop de monde autour de la scène, j'ai fini par gardé le dessin pour moi-même :)

I drew the drawing above in anticipation of Yann Tiersen's concert: the head is supposed to be mine, and the stage with the piano representing my anticipation of the concert. At some point I thought that I might get him to autograph it, or give it to him, but there were too many people pressing around the scene, so I ended up keeping the drawing for myself :)

J'ai dessiné celui ci-dessus après le concert. Chaque animal est supposé carricaturer le musicien d'après son comportement sur scène, et Yann Tiersen est representé par un Kokopeli, rayonnant sur ses musiciens et les spectateurs.

I drew the one above after the concert. Each animal is supposed to carricature the musicians according the behavior they showed on the scene, and Yann Tiersen is represented by a Kokopeli, shining on his musicians and the spectators.

Africa!

I am going to Chad, Africa, for two weeks, to visit some family and friends there. I hope to bring some good pictures!

I am bringing many presents to the people I will visit, and in parituclar some beautiful copper pieces made by my friend Alberto in Chile. From top/left to bottom/right (depending on your resolution): two African "Last Supper", four Canadian totems, and a Mexican mask, the fifth last made using the technique that Alberto and I designed, using a shaped wood support.

I bring some solar panels to reload my (four!) dictaphone, and some piece of art of my own!

Hopefully I will have good pictures when I come back. "Salam Salam!"

Regards de travers et Dragon Clown en cuivre

Alberto m'a donné mon dragon-clown en cuivre, résiné, encré et vernis. Il a "corrigé" sans me dire quelques détails, je pense que j'en ferais un autre, mais j'aime bien celui-là quand même!

Alberto gave me back my copper "Clown Dragon". He corrected several points, I think I would like to do another one and ink it myself to avoid interventions, but I still like this one!
